Barry S. Phillips

A 1962 pharmacy graduate of the University of Toronto, Barry has been a community pharmacy owner and Shoppers Drug Mart Associate in Toronto. In 1986 he recognized the need to educate senior citizens about the proper use of drugs and began a "Brown Bag" program in which patients brought in all their medication and pharmacists discussed their use and encouraged them to discard many of the products. The success of the program led to it being adopted by the Ontario Pharmacists’ Association. As a leader in pharmacy, Barry worked with Shoppers Drug Mart to introduce a patient profile system. He has also developed an employee assistance program for employees and their families who have an alcohol or drug dependency problem, emotional problem, or who require social service care. He is active in many community programs and has been instrumental in the planning and development of two new health centers – the Downsview Weston Health Centre and the Jane-Finch Community and Family Centre. He is a past president of the Ontario College of Pharmacists and chaired the Child Resistant Packaging committee. In 1986 he served as President of the Pharmacy Examining Board of Canada. He was awarded the A.H. Robins Bowl of Hygeia in 1987 and the CPhA Meritorious Service Award in 1988.
